What a wild experience, I flew all the way to Toronto from Calgary to work on this mess in 1000 degree heat, and I would do it again. I re-wired the lights, fit the doors, installed side pipes, disassembled and reinstalled the radiator, changed the thermostat, locked myself inside, fixed the seats, tuned the carb, took the steering column apart, reassembled the interior, and a bunch of other little things.

Full Speed Reid

Finally getting to drive it after all that work was amazing. Cletus, you got a good car (that I found for you haha)

Soon it’ll be time for me to head back, to work on my project, the world’s worst 1968 Datsun Roadster that I traded a $100 1984 VW GTI for.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been slowly rebuilding this car for the last year and a bit, basically rebuilding a car that only had half the sheet metal intact. This car would’ve gone to the scrap heap if I hadn’t saved it, there’s no way anybody would have taken on a project as giant as this if they didn’t love these cars as much as I do, my dad had a whole ton of them, it’s been my favourite car my entire life, and I’ve done all the work on it myself.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Now Cletus is gonna fly up here to see it, we have a crazy ambitions to take it to Montana...

What do you think Oppo? Am I crazy for building this?

Not crazy for building it, but like Vasili, you might never see Montana.

I’ve got until the middle of September to finish it, how hard could it be?

How was installing the radiator? I have to take the radiator out of mine/my dad’s ‘69 to get it re-cored and there seems to be no consensus online with some forum guys saying it’s a PITA and others saying they had no problem.

I love Datsun roadsters. I say keep the ratty vibe but make it safe. maybe do a short windscreen and a rollbar with some fender flares.

It’s going to be ratty for a long time, the body is so badly hail damaged that it would be silly to paint it now. I’ve done all the brakes and the floors, it’ll be totally legal! Fender flares is a definite possibility!

Take off the hood, and you have to remove the radiator, the fan shroud, and the radiator support as one unit, install it all as a single unit too, otherwise the fan shroud won’t clear your A-arms. It’s not difficult, just takes a couple guys to lift it in.

That Corvette suits you. We should trade.

Thanks! I dove in about a year ago, been a pretty steep learning curve. I learned to weld on Japanese 20 gauge junk steel.

Nice work on the Cletus Vette.

As for the Datsun, I love it. They are cool, unusual little cars. If you don’t want to restore it to stock, I’d create a single seat speedster out of it. Something like this:

Kinja'd!!!

But, you know, ratty. I’d make some some fender flares and rivet them on, chop the windshield, take the passenger seat out and make a sheet metal cowl to cover it, but still leave it in it’s current ratty state.

I like the way you think! Canvas tonneau covers are actually available to make it look like that, I’ll either buy one or just make it myself. I’d consider the windshield cut, but not until it gets broken or something, as they’re quite rare and expensive. The fender flares are actually wide already, but the inners are in the way, I’ve cut those out already haha

I hope so, this car was so awful that a stock restoration was totally impossible for my budget and skill level, but the car was basically free, so I’m just gonna do whatever I want with it, I’ve improved a lot of the goofy engineering on it as well to prevent rust from happening again.
